  • Hollywood Panzer : Tiger Facade is a 1950s-era Soviet T-55 tank, modified with sheet metal. These mockups used for war reenactments or movie extras in "Kelly's Heroes" and " Saving Private Ryan". Another postwar misnomer was that Panzer crews always wore Black uniforms. Black uniforms were the norm up to 1943 when camouflage or field-green uniforms were introduced to Heere (Army), Waffen-SS, and Luftwaffe armor units for better field concealment.

  • In identifying a fake Tiger, first examine the chassis and suspension. For photo above, non-interleaving tiger 7-1wheels and track patterns does not match war-time Tiger, besides there are only two operational Tiger tanks in the world, one in Samur military museum in France, other in Bovington military museum in Great Britain. They are simply too precious armor collectible to be lent for mere movie making. Two photos below show real hull shape, circular turret design, and chassis layout of T-55 tank. These tanks extensively used in combat among Middle East, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, and Caucasus battlefields.

  • Inset : Tiger Facade from American movie clip Saving Private Ryan, converted from WW2-era Soviet T-34 tank as identified by track pattern and single roadwheels. Saving Private Ryan: SdKfz 181 PzKpfw VI Tiger I tank - www.sproe.com/t/tiger-tank.html
