  • 3rd Panzer Division (3PD) was a Heere (Army) formation within German Wehrmacht (armed forces) Book 2structure, others formations were Luftwaffe (Air Force), Kriegsmarine (Navy), and Waffen-SS (Waffen Schultz-Staffel, or Armed Elite-Guard military arm of the Nazi party).   • Raised in Wunsdorf, Berlin in Oct 1935 (hence adopted arching Berlin Bear caricature as informal divisional insignia, shown above on this late Panzer IV tank), 3PD fought on Western and Eastern fronts. Its battles included Poland 1939, France 1940, Russia 1941-1942, and Caucasus region Summer 1942. Massive Soviet counter-offensive in Nov 1942 encircled German 6th Army at Stalingrad, also threaten Army Group A in Caucasus region as pincer closed in around Rostov. After heavy losses near Mozdok in Dec 1942, 3rd Panzer retreated back through Rostov to defense line north shore of Don River. 3rd Panzer continued its battles at Kharkov Summer 1943, Dnieper River Basin 1943-1944, Ukraine to Poland 1944, Hungary 1945, and final surrender in Austria 1945.   • Rollover : 3PD official divisional insignia evolved through various stages, with upside-down E (representing Berlin's Brandenburger Tor gate) during early war years, to inverted Y marking of late war era.   • Panzertruppen crews traditionally wore black uniforms, as shown in German Unteroffizier tank commander photo (rollover). By 1943, tank crews mixed camouflage tunic and trouser with their outfits, most wore camouflage tunic and black trousers. This enabled tank commander to reduce its visibility to enemy observation. Apparatus clamped to Unteroffizier neck is a throat-microphone, it amplified and transmitted throat vibrations during speech to other crewmen.
