Panzer II tank and Stupa parked at Italian roadside watching Allied Prisoners of War (POW) being marched off to rear collection stations. POWs are wearing British WW1-style helmets, they are probably Free French Moroccan troops recently captured. Note German crews wear a mixture of Panzer Black and Forest Green uniforms. Panzer II tank, armed with 2cm canon and MG34 machine gun, was a frontline tank during war commencement in 1939, but was quickly outclassed by Russian armor during 1941 invasion of Soviet Union, thus withdrawn to anti-partisan duties, rear echelon escorts, and divisional headquarter protection. Rollover
: Early-production Stupa on Eastern Front with full schurzen side-skirt armor set and heavy foliage cover. Schurzen are thin armor plates and cannot deflect or prevent enemy armor-piercing rounds. Its thermal-dynamic purpose is to detonate enemy rounds on the plates, thus expending majority of kinetic energy. Remaining kinetic energy would be unable to penetrate hull compartment. Sociological note, Germany - Italy - Japan (Tripartite Pact or main Axis powers) formally
declared war against US on 10 Dec 1941, Americans never considered Italians to be worthy WW2 opponents. US history emphasize Germany and Japan as formidable enemies, virtually nothing is mentioned about Italy. One rationale may be lackluster Italian military leadership and performance in Greece 1941, North Africa 1941-1943, and sudden collapse of Mussolini government when Allies invaded Sicily in Fall 1943. However, to be fair, Italian combat formations on Eastern Front were competently lead by its Junior officers even though their senior military leadership was laced with demerits,
nepotism, and corruption. Tripartite Pact - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripartite_Pact

- Inset : Historical note on road signs, 1930s Italian cities of Anzio and Nettuno was organized into a single metropolitan area called Nettunia. Road signs of the era show directions for Nettunia instead of Anzio. When German reinforcements arrived in the area, their troops hand-painted separate Anzio and Netunno road signs to direct traffic.
