Chance Vought F4U Corsair was a premier 1940s fighter plane, its gull-wing shape provides easy recognition. In WW2, main operation was in Pacific Theater, although a few served with British Fleet Air Arm in European theater. US Navy originally declined Corsair carrier deployment due to the plane's high landing speeds, thus US Marines squadron stationed in the Solomon Islands were the first Corsairs combat operators in 1943. By Fall 1944, incessant Japanese Kamikaze attacks against the US Fleet compelled the Navy to emergency deploy US Marines Corsair squadrons onto its carriers. F4U Corsairs were faster than the Navy's F6F Hellcat fighters, thus were able to intercept the Japanese suicide planes before they could reach the US carrier task force.
