  • History of fourth USS Princeton (CVL-23) was an epic WW2 struggle. Deployed to Battle of Leyte Gulf in Fall 1944 (also called Second Battle of the Philippine Sea), she was struck by a Japanese Kamikaze on 24 Oct 1944 during flight launch operations. Resulting explosion of planes, fuel, and munitions blew out both elevator doors, shrapnel injured hundreds more. Destroyer USS Irwin (DD-794) pulled along side to removed the wounded, her deck was crammed with almost 700 sailors. When cruiser USS Birmingham (CL-62) pulled along side to assist fire fighting, Princeton's internal munition store blew up, torn apart its stern, killed over 200 and injured over 400 on the Birmingham. Order was thus given to sink the Princeton derelict by torpedo fire. Over 100 Princeton men were killed in the attack, about 1, 400 men were rescued. USS Princeton (CVL 23)

  • The Bridges at Toko-Ri, starring William Holden and Grace Kelly, is a Korean War epic with extensive footage of F9F Panther jet operations. Storyline has William Holden being a reluctant Navy reserve pilot reactivated back to service for the unpopular war. His unit has to bomb the North Korea bridges at Toko-ri gorge, laced with anti-aircraft batteries. He is overwhelmed with fear, but duty to colleagues prevails, and is subsequently killed in action. In the movie, F9F squadron tailcodes B (VF-192) and PP (VC-61) are depicted. At movie's end, complimenting the character's courage and mettle, the Admiral remarks "Where do we get these men ?".
