Large MARINES marking underneath the wing is for both ground and aerial recognition to prevent friendly-fire incidents. Rollover : Corsair tail section festooned with abundant markings, including national insignia, Marine squadron VMF-323, and large WS tail code indicating VMF-323. During WW2, combat squadrons were assigned to specific carrier flat-tops, thus their tail codes reflected a specific carrier (ex. Enterprise, Lexington, Franklin). By late-1940s, air unit organization became independent, combat squadrons were rotated among multiple carriers based on logistics and need, thus each squadron developed unique tail codes for identification.
