  • Inset 1 : WW2-era Coca-Cola marcom advertisement showing shark-faced P-40 engaging Japanese fighters in South Pacific theater. Red outline around US insignia indicates this marcom was produced circa mid-1943. Nose art - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nose_art

  • Rollover : P-40 was first US aircraft to score aerial kill during Imperial Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor : US naval base in Hawaii Islands (thus bringing US into WW2).

  • Originally, US Navy Pacific HQ was located state-side in San Diego-California. But in mid-1941 to counter increasing Japan's imperialist ambitions in Asia and shortened distance to support US colonial possessions in Central Pacific and Philippines, move of US Pacific Naval HQ intended to make Japan to "take notice and think twice " about any imperialist ambitions. • "Take notice" Imperial Japan did and viewed movement of such large military assets as direct challenge and threat to her economic survival. With Germany conquering vast European regions on other side of the globe, Japan used this shift in geopolitics to destroy and seize European colonial possessions in Asia, especially oil and natural rubber-rich Dutch East Indies (aka Indonesia), British Malaya (aka Malaysia), and port city Singapore. Japan already possessed nominal control of French Indochina in 1940 after French surrender to Germany and new Vichy French regime allow station and transit of Japanese troops thru territory. Japan anticipated US military response against such offensives (mid-1941 US embargo scrap steel exports to Japan, thus severely impeding her weapons production), thus planned Pearl Harbor attack to destroy US Pacific naval power, making Japan defacto naval "Head Honcho" of region. 1940 Invasion of French Indochina - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_Expedition

  • WW2 Thailand trivia : After Dec 1941 Pearl Harbor attack, US and Imperial Japan mutually declared war on each other. Since Japan was Tripartite Pact member, Germany and Italy also declared war against US. Surprisingly, Thailand also declared war against US in alliance with Japan. Tripartite Pact 1940 - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripartite_Pact

  • Story goes that when Japan forced Vichy French (pro-German French government installed after 1940 surrender) to allow stationing of Japanese troops in Indochina, this inspired right-wing military overthrow of pro-US Thai government. Ostensibly, new right-wing Thai regime wanted to annex western regions of Cambodia (a fertile agricultural area of the Mekong River, enabling the land to harvest crops 3 times a year), and has been a traditional point of military conflict between feudal Thailand and Vietnam for a few hundred years. Japan agreed to transfer requested Cambodia lands on precondition Thailand joined WW2 Axis pact. Vichy France - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vichy_France

  • However, when formal Thai declaration of war was sent to US, the Thai ambassador (who belong to the previous pro-US faction that was overthrown) refused to delivery the declaration. Hence, US never formally received a Thai declaration of war, even though a state of war existed between the two countries until 1945. As reward for such loyalty, US restored previous pro-US faction back to power after WW2 end. History of Thailand - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Thailand

  • Roundel #6 : June 1943, USAAF introduced "Star and Bars Red Outline" aerial insignia, mainly to avoid friendly-fire incidents since previous Star with Blue Roundel insignia resembled German Iron Cross insignia. Given "green" (American slang for youthful inexperience) battle experience of US troops at that time, they tended to fire at any aircraft close at hand during combat operations.

  • Original directive was to add only 2 white bars to roundel to make insignia stand-out. However, to accentuate the white bars, red border outlined the entire insignia.

  • Roundel #7 : Aug 1943, red outline was removed, entire insignia outlined by blue (same color as roundel). This streamlined logistics of painting the insignia. US would use this standard throughout WW2.

  • Roundel #8 : Quintessential US roundel since 1947, with red bars added to inside of white bars, thus restoring US insignia back to traditional red-white-blue color palette.

  • Roundel #9 : Late-1970s, from low-visibility camouflage research, along with US "Top Gun" fighter training school operations, modified US insignia began to appear on US combat planes. Basically, it is a grey-scale image of 1947 Stars and Bars. UweM US Navy F-5E Aggressor - uwemilitaria.org/3-Aerial/F5Aggressor/index.html
