One of the premier fighters of WW2, P-51 Mustang significantly contributed to Allied strategic bombing campaigns in Europe by its long-range escort of US Army Air Force bomber formations from bases in England to targets deep inside Germany. Originally North American P-51 was developed for British Royal Air Force order of low-altitude recon aircraft in 1942. By late-1944 installation of a new engine enabled this fighter to extend its cruising range to accompany Allied bomber formations. P-51 - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-51
