Late P-51 variants had the sliding Bubble Canopy (derived from British Malcolm sliding hood canopy) which offered near all-around pilot view. - P-51 airframe was used for a variety of configurations, including A-36 ground-attack, F-6 recon, F-51 ground attack, twin-engine F-82 night fighter, and 1960-1980s counter-insurgency (COIN) versions called Cavalier, Turbo III, and Piper Enforcer. Last users of P-51 were South American countries in early-1980s engaged in COIN operations, including El Salvador, Guatemala, Dominican Republic.
