  • 1.35th-scale Armor Personnel Carrier from 1986 "Aliens" movie, up-detailed to Urban Assault Transport (UAT) of Federal Paramilitary Police - 3rd Constabulary District. Original Aliens APC was somewhat bland it exterior detail, so in mid-1990s there was frequent insertcustomizations completed by various modelers. Some opted for full interior compartment detail, others painted black-white-grey urban assault camouflage. UweM decided to showcase it in Police Paramilitary"Blue" colors. • Inset 1 : Actual APC used in Aliens movie which is a radio-controlled scaled model, painted Colonial Marines "Green", main turret armaments stored in vehicle rear. Note differential front-rear wheels for tight steering control. Weapon inset is assault rifle and grenade launcher used by movie character Ellen Ripley played by Sigourney Weaver. • Rollover : For UAT model, moving parts include top turret rotate and move on railings for rear storage when transversing constricted overhead spacing, wheels rotate, front remote-control weapons turret rotate. Top turret armed with twin large photon pulse cannons and twin smaller phaser cannons, front turret armed with twin phaser cannons. Given its armaments, vehicle should be classified as Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) rather than Armor Personnel Carrier (APC). • APC concept traced back to WW2 when Germans developed Panzergrenadieren (mechanized armored infantrymen) concept, in which men would ride in armored transports along side with advancing tanks and self-propelled gun thus keeping momentum and exploitation of the advance. These men fought from their vehicles and dismounted only when necessary (ex. eliminating enemy anti-tank positions, pill-boxes, building enclaves). Germans originally deployed frontline unarmored mechanized transports in 1939-1940 campaigns (ex. trucks, kubelwagens, motorcycles), but suffered high casualty rates when these forces initially ran into enemy positions. Thus, armored halftracks and trucks became mainstay of WW2 German mechanized forces. In fact, mere image of German SdKfz 251 armored halftrack became iconic symbol of German Panzergrenadieren mobility warfare doctrine. SdKfz 251 (OT-810) - www.sdkfz251.com

  • APC were basically Battle Taxis via transport of infantrymen in protective environment for combat dismount, its armor thickness could only defend against light caliber enemy fire. Even in insertWW2, both Axis and Allies up-gunned their APCs to provide direct fire support for advancing infantrymen (ex. US M3 half-track with 75mm anti-tank gun, German SdKfz 251 with triple 2cm anti-aircraft cannons). Some were field-modifications, while others ad-hoc variants produced at factory level. By 1960s, concept of APC providing both troop transport and direct fire support matured into Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), such as modern US Army Ms Bradley IFV. • Inset 2 : Aliens APC model built SOB (straight of the box), although accurate to movie depiction, its was somewhat bland to my perspective, thus conceptualized my Aliens APC into UAT IFV concept. This model depicted in Fantastic Plastic Pop Culture website. Fantastic Plastic - www.fantastic-plastic.com/COLONIAL%20MARINE%20APC%20PAGE.htm
