July 1977, Kitty Hawk stern view as ship headed for Puget Sound Naval Yard in Bremerton-Washington for a $100 million overhaul which lasted over a year, F-8 Crusader jets with folded-wings parked in foreground. Modifications enable the carrier to deploy F-14 Tomcat and S-3 Viking jets, along with related storage - ordnance - maintenance facilities. • Rollover : Sisters-in-Arms : CV-63 USS Kitty Hawk and CV-64 USS Constellation circa late-1980s (note F-18 Hornet, A-3 Viking, and US Air Force F-15 Eagle jets on flat-top). Constellation and America (CVA-66) carriers were built on the same Kitty Hawk hull design. USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) carrier was designated as an improved Kitty Hawk hull design, hence a separate ship classification. USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uss_john_f._kennedy

  • Kitty Hawk Radio Call Sign is November - Zulu - Foxtrot - Foxtrot (NZFF), its tactical voice radio call is PAWTUCKET. In early days of inner-ship telephone and inter-ship radio communications, regular confusion arose over letter pronunciations (ex. D vs. B, S vs. X), a phonetic alphabet was established to pronounce complete words as representative of individual letters to clarify communiques if transmissions were garbled. This was further expanded with signal flags of unique patterns representing individual letters. Thus right inset shows Kitty Hawk NZFF flag signal patterns.
