  • Carrier stern showing angle landing deck, large vertical yellow stripe aligned with middle of landing area, giving pilots visual aid if the plane pitches below flattop horizon during landing approach. Three Kitty Hawk-class carriers were constructed for US Navy : 1) CV-63 Kitty Hawk, 2) CV-64 Constellation, 3) CVA-66 America. CV-67 John F. Kennedy (an improved Kitty Hawk class) is considered a separate ship hull classification.

  • Of these three carriers, only CV-63 Kitty Hawk is still in operation. This carrier underwent major overhauls in 1977, 1982, 1987, and 1998. Most important was 1987 overhaul via Service Life Extension Program (SLEP), completed in Fall 1990 with major electronic and armaments upgrades, thus extended another 20 years to planned 30-year life of the vessel. • Rollover : Carrier starboard side, showing two of its flight elevators for transporting planes into hull storage. General naval nomenclature identifies ship's front section as BOW, rear as STERN, left as PORT, right as STARBOARD. Originally, the left side was called LARBOARD, but this was gradually replaced in mid-19th century since the term could be confused with STARBOARD when commands were issued by loudness of voice. Hence PORT was selected as replacement since the ship docked on the left (seaport) side.
