  • Volkssturm should not be confused with Volksgrenadier units which were ex-German veterans serving in National Guard formations. In combat, Volkssturm were almost totally useless militarily since they were controlled by Nazi party hierarchy, Volksgrenadier were organized and lead by the German military. With Soviet tank superiority outnumbering Germans from 10-to-1 to 50-to-1, only defensive fallback was to hunt down these Soviet tanks in build-up urban areas with Panzerfausts. This tactic was successfully utilized by all combatants, thus armor usually advanced with infantry support in closed-up urban or heavy foliaged areas. Germans also designed Panzerfaust 250 which had a pistol grip and solid propellant in both warhead and firing tube, but did not go into production.
