7.2 ) Grass & Trees

Terrain surfacing of grass and trees give the model/diorama extra contouring and three-dimensional appeal. Grass material are usually derived from model train scenery products. Trees can be after-market products or branches taken directly one's own backyard.

Grass #2 Sample : German Hetzer tank destroyer, slightly sunk into soft earth with churned-up grass chunks. Grass has been painted interlacing shades of light green and tan colors.

Churned Grass Sample : German Panther tank with heavy churned-up mud and earth debris. Tank track impressions are usually made with plaster, with terrain surfacing of rock-sand-grass added for later detail.

Palm Tree Sample : German Panzer III in North Africa terrain. Base made of plaster with fine coarse rocks and sand sprinkled onto its surface. Palm tree is an after-market product.

Model grass are generally made from rubber compounds, finely cut to scale, and can be airbrushed into different shades of color.

After-market tree stumps, usually made from plastic, plaster, or white metal. They offer scaled details to model diorama.

Actual figs and small tree branches, can be used in modeling so long as proper scaling are considered.

Animated growth pattern of leaves from computer games or other online simulations can be used to custom-built model trees.
